How to Modify & Customize Your Instrument

This book will explain how to perform the more common and desirable modifications to electric guitars, specifically those that require no specialised tools or advanced repair techniques. Basic installation techniques and methods will also be discussed.

Emphasis will be on choosing the right parts to fit existing instruments, their features, their differences, their applications and their effect on tone.

There will be an in-depth chapter on wiring, which will include everything the reader will need to plan and complete any wiring job or modification.

There will be an entire chapter documenting building a guitar completely from parts, and will cover everything from the planning stage to finishing, assembly and setup.

Important reference material will be included, for example pickup colour codes for popular manufacturers, how these relate to each other, and applying them to schematics. A selection of at least 20 schematic diagrams will also be included, covering every important and useful wiring scheme.

The Effects Handbook

The recent surge of inexpensive, digital processing and modeling has seen increasingly complex effects units incorporated into a wide variety of musical equipment. Standalone FX processors, guitar amplifiers, recording software, synthesizers, PA mixing desks and electronic drum kits are all becoming increasingly powerful and complex. This has led to a situation where an increasing number of people, even those at the entry level, are faced with a steep learning curve and a bewildering variety of options. The book will break effects usage down to a simple level, explaining:

  • What each effect does, the operation of each of the controls and how it affects the sound
  • Specific starting points
  • Which FX compliment each other
  • How best to get effects to work together
  • Practical examples showing which effects work best with specific instruments and example settings
  • Tackling common problems with specific instrument sounds
  • Advanced effects techniques section for those who want to learn how to experiment constructively
